Fernando Botero has become the leading figure of Colombian art. His unique works encompass anecdotes, histories and above all a great passion for his country. His famous “gordos” (fat people) have traveled to the farthest and most well-known capitals of the world. Colombia, and especially his hometown of Medellin, enjoy the privilege of claiming Botero’s largest public exhibits. A mixture of 3 destinations explored from the perspective of Botero and his work: Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena are the chosen stops on this tour. The tour consists of a total of 11 nights between the 3 cities.

This tour begins in Medellin, the city that gave birth to the master. This destination offers not only the artist’s collection but a glimpse at a social transformation of vital importance. Among the activities will be a visit to the Museum of Antioquia, where the master painter/sculptor has donated part of his personal collection. The church plays a key role in his artistic vocation and The Metropolitan Cathedral is the best example to illustrate that importance.

It’s not just traditional art. Medellin enjoys being an open gallery of amazing artists. The graffiti flourishes in places that have suffered heavy periods of violence. The tour permits visitors to be part of the change and to learn firsthand how it has come about in a city that has survived a difficult era.

A domestic flight will take you to the capital. Bogota also has an amazing collection of art donated by Botero. The visit begins at the historical center, Museo del Oro and of course the painter’s collection located in the Botero Museum. The tour continues onward to visit one of the major tourist attractions of Colombia: The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira. This mega work of Colombian engineering is located on the outskirts of the capital. During this tour travelers will witness the Stations of the Cross, a uniquely special experience that is not to be missed.

After visiting these two cities and being filled with knowledge about the master Botero, you will travel to the city that is also a historical monument of humanity: Cartagena.

Not only did the master pay tribute to this beautiful city by donating a unique sculpture located in the Plaza Santo Domingo, but the whole architecture of the walled city plays a fundamental role in the tour. Here, walking is the most recommended means of transportation and we will tour the city as such. We will see the Castle of San Felipe, the Convent of La Popa and other well-known tourist attractions. You cannot say goodbye to this city without visiting the Rosario Islands, an archipelago located in the Caribbean Sea just 1 hour from the city of Cartagena. The islands are a natural spectacle in itself. There is no better way to say goodbye to a trip full of culture and art than to visit these beaches. A total of 11 nights, this trip offers a wealth of artistic and cultural experience.
